Since the 1950s aliens have fascinated us. They can be scary, they can be funny, but it is great to see the amazing amount of alien tattoo designs available. The image of aliens as either super scary slithery beasts or super smart little green guys with giant heads and huge insect-like eyes comes from urban legends, movies and other parts of pop culture.

According to the legends of the new era, aliens visit the people of Earth and either kidnap and experiment on certain individuals, or they are out to save humanity from itself depending on who is telling the story. They have invaded our imagination if nothing else and creative, clever and hysterically funny designs are easy to find and personalize.

Other than the almost-but-not-quite-cute alien we have with the scary absolutely inhuman visages usually associated with movies and television, especially from the work of Hans Ruedi Giger, a Swiss surrealist painter who envisioned the horrific alien terrors like the ones in the movies Alien, Alien 3 and Species.  These frightening creatures make great alien tattoo designs, especially if you are looking for something very detailed and dark.  Tattoos based on this type of artwork go best with either tribal or a quirky font pattern if you want an inscription or saying underneath or within the design. These can also be woven into very large and complex designs for a full sleeve or half sleeve tattoo, or a large piece or panel across the chest, back or abdomen.

The smaller aliens based on urban legends of gray or little green men can be made to look very intimidating if not downright frightening as well. A dark design with thick bold contours works best as will dark coloring.  For this type of tattoo to look scary the colors should stay far darker than you might otherwise choose for a tattoo. This would mean black, deep gray, silver, brick or fire red, heavy purple, dark green and dark blue. Lighter colors will dull the representation.

For inspiration of how to make these aliens look more realistic and scary you might look at Hans Ruedi Giger’s work and search for ideas while not going all out for the other alien look.  You might want to check with your tattooist and see what designs are on hand.  Make sure before the tattoo starts that the person doing the body art understands what you want.

Cute alien faces are often used for humorous effect. The large headed alien with the deep dark insect-like eyes can be made to look silly, helpless or out of place quite easily in even a very simple alien design tattoo. You can play with the color turning the usually dull gray alien any color of the rainbow to create the effect you desire.  Your alien can be depicted as cute and lovable if you want if you find the right design.
