To compete in the tournament was a sure way to build your reputation and standing as a knight. It became such an ordeal that everyone would gather and watch the knights as they engaged in mock battle.
In the early days anyone could take a family crest or coat of arms; however as times moved on they were only available through the Monarch. They could also be passed down through the family.
