Once you choose your design and get your tattoo, giving your ink the proper care is crucial. The healing time for your tattoo can vary depending on the size and location of the tattoo.  Your individual healing process can vary from that of others who have been tattooed.

If your tattoo artist applied a bandage, leave it on for about two hours.  When removing the bandage, do not just yank it off.  Wetting the bandage with warm water can help to loosen it from the skin upon removal.

After you remove the bandage, clean the tattoo by washing with a mild soap, and allow it to dry.  Place a thin layer of salve, A&D ointment is a good choice, on the tattoo.  You should avoid using Neosporin because it can cause the tattoo to heal too quickly, and likely damage your tattoo.  You should also avoid Vaseline and other oil based products because they can clog the pores, and add time to the healing process.  You should also avoid using alcohol on your new tattoo, as it can lead to fading color.  Continue to apply the salve for the first few days.  After that you can switch to a non-scented lotion to help your tattoo continue to heal.

Do not soak your new tattoo.  It is okay to get your tattoo wet in the shower, however you should avoid taking a bath, or swimming for two weeks.  When washing your tattoo use your fingertips to gently clean it with a mild soap.  After the shower be careful to pat it dry, do not rub the tattoo.  If you rub the tattoo to dry it, you run the risk of removing a scab which can remove the ink.

As your tattoo heals it will probably become itchy.  Do not scratch a healing tattoo; doing so can cause damage to your new piece of art.

Protect your tattoo from the sun.  Once you have invested both your time and money in receiving your tattoo, keep it looking great by protecting it.  The suns ultraviolet rays can cause the color in your tattoo to fade rapidly.  You should not expose your tattoo to the sun unless you are using a sun block that is at least 30spf.

Making the decision to get a tattoo is a permanent one.  You should put a lot of thought and consideration into this decision.  Make sure your tattoo stays in top shape by caring for it properly.
