Tattoo Placement And Locations To Put Tattoos

Posted by Tattooaholic

tattoo locationsYou have made the big decision to get your first tattoo, and you have even picked out a design, but do you know where to put it?  Tattoo placement should be on the top of your list when you are researching your tattoo options.

The first thing to consider when thinking about the placement of your tattoo is, do you want everyone to know that you have a tattoo?  This is a very important question because certain locations are more visible than others.

If you are looking for a tattoo that is highly visible, some location to consider are:

  • Face
  • Neck
  • Fingers
  • Hands
  • Lower Arms
  • Feet
  • Wrist

If you do choose to go with one of these locations, you should consider all of the disadvantages.  Tattoos in these locations are extremely difficult to cover up, and everyone will see the statement that you are trying to make.  It may also limit your employment possibilities.  Some work places frown upon visible tattoos, and will not hire people who have them.  Also consider the fact that these highly visible tattoos are often the first thing that people will notice about you, and could give others the wrong impression of who you are.  The upkeep of tattoos located in these areas is also something to consider.  When a tattoo receives a lot of exposure to Ultraviolet rays and is constantly rubbed by clothing, it can cause the tattoo to fade.  This will lead to touchups in the future.  Depending on how much money you want to invest in your art work, this can be a major drawback.

Tattoos that are more easily hidden include:

  • Back
  • Hip
  • Upper arm
  • Stomach
  • Thigh
  • Ankle

Tattoos in these locations are easily hidden by clothing.  Although they also may receive damage due to your clothing rubbing against them, they are often hidden from the Ultraviolet ray exposure.  These locations are ideal for someone who receives a tattoo that has a special meaning to them.

Pain level is also a major factor in deciding on your location.  Areas that have less fat tend to be more painful, for example the wrist.  There is little fat between the skin and bone to cushion the needle during the tattoo process, and this can lead to more pain.

Whatever location you choose for your tattoo, be sure that you will be happy with it forever.  Tattoos are meant to be permanent, and are not easily removed.  If you are going to sit through the pain of receiving a tattoo, you want to make sure it is something that you will be proud for others to see.
