The Significance of Dove Tattoos

Posted by Tattooaholic

dove tattoosDove tattoos can express a number of meanings. They can be a symbol of Christianity aside from the usual cross, as a representation of the Holy Spirit that descended upon Jesus like a dove. They can mean peace, hope or new life. Or a dove tattoo can mean a connection to the occult and other supernatural forces. Most see them as representing eternal or long-lasting love. There are many eagle tattoos or swallow tattoos, or even hummingbird tattoos, but no other bird has so many powerful meanings as the dove.

The Chinese believe that dove tattoos represent a long and healthy life, and the tattoo may express a wish to have such. The Celts, among other ancient people, believed that birds were omens of either good or evil, doves among them. Some even name their children Dove, or the local equivalent. For example, the Scottish and Irish boys’ name Callum means dove.

A dove tattoo can signify independence and purity to the one who wears it. Many others sport tattoos as symbols of honor or strength or as badges of military service – a dove can even serve there. These tattoos are often hidden under clothing, but those who carry them are proud of them nevertheless. The outline of a dove filled with a national flag could certainly serve as a sign that the one who carries it wishes for world peace. In fact, those who passionately desire peace in the world often request a tattoo of the dove of peace.

Dove tattoos can also serve as a memorial to friends or family who have passed on, as depicted by a dove with a year banner draped in its beak, to represent the afterlife. Something as long lasting as a tattoo can serve as a permanent reminder of those loved ones who have gone on before. These can be worn by men or by women, expressing both serenity and love.

Once the decision to get a dove tattoo has been made, the selection process has only begun. There are many different styles of art to pick to give the tattoo its own unique character. Single line art can give the tattoo a stark, bold look. Coloring it in does not have to stop at just white – there are a number of intricate Celtic or tribal designs to choose from to create some connection to a particular heritage, or the flag option motioned above might be taken by the peace-minded. Two doves can serve to signify a lasting romantic bond with another person. For example, a pair of doves on a single branch is often requested by newly wed couples.

There are a great many ways to use a dove tattoo, with enough meanings and styles to compliment any other tattoos that may be present. A dove can represent a number of strong and powerful concepts and expressions that many would be proud to have as a first tattoo or the latest in a collection of art.
